The Vientamese Community has served as an integral part of the Diocese of Victoria and enriched the faith life of the particular church. The celebration of the Sacraments in the Vietnamese language has been a central expression of the faith in the Palacios area.
In August of 1975, a few months after the fall of Saigon, 101 people including 11 families and one Priest, Father Joseph Trinh Duc Pham, settled in Port Isabel, Texas. They lived and worked at the local shrimping company because many had previous experience with this work. In the months that followed, many of the new arivals began to explore different cities to discover other opportunities to support their famlies.
In 1985, Father Joseph Pham began organizing and creating a community in Palacios for the Vietnamese people of the area. The hope was that this was would facilitate the continued growth of the Vietnamese community, maintain cultural traditions and language, and serve future generations as roots were established in their new home. A subdivision was built (Bethany Park) where the Vietnamese Catholic community gathered and built a chapel, naming it in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption. Father Joseph Phan died in October of 2007, and the community was administered by various Vietnamese-speaking priests during the interim period. The Vietnamese Catholic community welcomed Father Dominic Trung Nguyen to Palacios in December of 2011. In 2015, he began the project of building a new sanctuary to replace the chapel and it was blessed and dedicated on August 12, 2017.
